Basma was born in Cairo, Egypt. She pursued her studies at Misr International University (MIU), where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2018 and a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Medicinal Chemistry) in 2023. Her master’s thesis, “Design, Synthesis, and Biological Evaluation of Novel Arylpyrrole Derivatives with Antibacterial Activity,” combined computational drug design, organic synthesis, and structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis, leading to the development of new leads with promising antibacterial properties. Alongside her research, she worked as an Assistant Lecturer at MIU, teaching Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Computer-Aided Drug Design while supervising undergraduate projects. In 2025, she joined the Frei Lab at the University of York as a PhD student, where she is developing new metalloantibiotics using modular synthesis, automation, and machine learning. Outside the lab, Basma enjoys creative writing, literature, hiking, yoga, and cooking.
